The Update | Polka Star Mollie B Returning to Avon Oaks; Oak Hill Cemetery Tours

GIRARD, Ohio – Polka music band Squeezebox, featuring Mollie B and Ted Lange, will return to the Avon Oaks, 1401 N. State St., on Oct. 14 at 3 p.m.

This might be the last opportunity to see the band again, as it has announced that they will not tour again after this road trip.

Peppermint Records of Youngstown is sponsoring the concert.

Accompanied by her husband, accordionist/vocalist Ted Lange, and the Squeezebox Band, Mollie provides a variety of polkas, waltzes and standards for dancing and listening enjoyment.

Del Sinchak Band will also perform at the event.

Avon Oaks features a large wooden dance floor, spacious seating and free parking. Food and beverages will be available. No BYOB. Open seating begins at 2 p.m.

Sign Up for Oak Hill Cemetery Tours

YOUNGSTOWN – The Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s annual Oak Hill Cemetery Tour will take place Oct. 21.

Tours will begin every 20 minutes from 11 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased in advance at mahoninghistory.org (click on the “Book a cemetery tour” button).

Registration will open to historical society members on Oct. 1, and to the general public on Oct. 8.

Used Book Sale at Westminster Presbyterian

BOARDMAN, Ohio – Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, will present its annual used book sale Oct. 11-13.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Not in its 67th year, the sale will offer thousands of hardback and paperback books.

Categories include children’s, fiction, nonfiction, history, cooking, military, sports, hobbies, religion, as well as puzzles, music albums and CDs, and DVDs. Many selections are less than one dollar.

The sale is open to the public.

All paperbacks will be reduced to 25 cents on Oct. 12. All books will be half off on Oct 13 until 4 p.m.; from 4-7 p.m. that day, books will be sold for $1 a bag.

Proceeds will support the church’s outreach projects.

String Quartet Concert at Firestone Park

COLUMBIANA – The public is invited to a free concert at Firestone Park on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m. at the Idabelle Firestone Gathering Place and Garden featuring the Allure string chamber quartet. 
Allure will present a concert of the traditional music of major composers, ranging from Tchaikovsky to John Lennon. 

Twelve-year-old violinist Lydia Andres will also perform. Shaded seating under a canopy is provided, and admission and parking are free.

A shuttle is available to take visitors to the outdoor amphitheater at the top of the hill.
